Rubbish

This artist’s book is primarily a print job: I’m an engraver and my brain works in black/white and in a specular manner.

But this book is also a complaint document: subjects of my prints are painful people cut off from the world, men, women and children forgotten by civilised society, who are treated as waste: nobody takes care of them because nobody thinks of they are human beings.

Form and content together were conceived to underline the concept of refuse; all the materials are recycled and all of poor value: the pages are printed on some filling paper and the cover is made of reused cardboard. Using this cardboard I have made an old box, used and damaged, that has traveled around and now, in the end, is like a trash bin and then I have crumpled up my prints and thrown them away on it.

This was a sore action, a disavowal of their value, but a necessary act that spares no one: not me but also not the reader who has to repeat it when he is reading the book, takes responsibility for making again my works trash and so people I painted.

In 2022 Rubbish won the first prize in the Primo Premio Libro d’Artista Grafica Italiana 2022 called by the Associazione Nazionale Incisori Italiani.

Special thanks to Pietro Maiorca for the video editing and to Francesco Alzetta for translating the text in the video into English.

Rubbish will be on display at the ADI Museum in Milan!

Here’s the invitation.
